Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun Collection 1890-2008 1940-1990.

The collection consists of the institutional records of Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun. While there is a small amount of material from the early years of the synagogue, the majority of the records are from 1940s-1990s. The Office of the Rabbi series, which contains the files of Rabbis Joseph and Haskel Lookstein, and the Administrative Office series, which contains files on synagogue operations and activities, are the most comprehensive. There are also files of the Executive Director, as well as records documenting the activities of the Men's Club, Sisterhood, and Building Committee, bound volumes of various meeting minutes and synagogue bulletins, yearbooks, blueprints, and some photographs and videos from synagogue events.

Congregation Kehilath Jeshurun was founded in 1872 in the Yorkville section of Manhattan's Upper East Side. Despite being established during a period of decline in traditional Judaism, the synagogue adhered to Orthodox practice and custom. In 1905, Rabbi Moses Zevulun Margolies (also known as the RaMaZ), a renowned rabbinic scholar and communal leader, became the senior rabbi and served until his death in 1936.
